La Misma gente originated in the 1970s in Palmira, Colombia, as a student band called Mamut. Initially they experimented with western style rock but gradually leaned towards the music of their own culture. As La Misma gente, meaning the same people, they finally embraced traditional Afro Caribbean rhythms to become one of Colombias leading exponents of salsa. At the heart of this, their sixth album, is a collection of salsa romantica, uptempo tropical love songs. More typical of their style are El Loco, the title track, and Maria Luisa, which was number one in the mexican charts for 6 months, hot tropical sounds which are uniquely characterised by their traces of rock roots.
